At CICS Avalon, My Kids Are Embraced for Who They Are: LaTrina Hilson, ReGen Parent
My two children are as different as night and day. My daughter, Presleigh, is artistic and introverted; my son, Lennox, is a social butterfly. Presleigh likes having time to herself; Lennox thrives by having routines. You might not think that the same school would be the right place for both of them, but CICS Avalon is that school.
I first heard about CICS Avalon, part of the ReGeneration Schools network, because it was down the street from our house. School staff were knowledgeable about my kids’ needs and even arranged to meet Presleigh before she enrolled. CICS Avalon has always felt like family to us. For kids who spend most of their lives at school, having that support makes all the difference in the world.
Presleigh, who just finished sixth grade, loves writing and drawing. Her teachers have really helped draw out her creative side while supporting her as she comes out of her shell socially. They give her opportunities to write and draw during class as encouragement to keep up with her academic studies. They set up clubs and group activities to share her writing and art with her peers. One of her teachers even gave her a special journal to write in, which meant so much to her.
When Lennox first started kindergarten at CICS Avalon, he often struggled to stay focused in class. We worked with the school to set up an individualized education plan. He just finished third grade, and he has grown exponentially! His teachers are always on top of what he needs, whether it’s in his general education classes or in his diverse learning classes. They celebrate every learning milestone with him and recognize his unique skills and talents.
For both Presleigh and Lennox, school isn’t just about academics. They’re learning social skills as well. Their teachers at CICS Avalon have started to help guide them as they learn how to interact with their classmates and with adults. I’m excited to see how they continue to grow at a school that prioritizes both scholars’ academic knowledge and their social development.
Children aren’t all alike, even when they come from the same family. CICS Avalon has embraced my two very different kids, each in their own way. I believe in lifelong learning, and I know that being at CICS Avalon is creating a strong foundation for both of my children.
