The School that Brought Me Back to Education: Variona Carr, CISC Avalon
I am grateful to ReGeneration Schools for reconnecting me and my children to the love of learning and the satisfaction that comes from rising to high expectations. When ReGen found my resume online, I was working in real estate and I thought I might never return to teaching due to negative experiences I had in other schools. But when I visited CICS Avalon for my interview, I was so impressed by the structured yet joyful environment that I knew immediately it was the right school for me and my children.
While the teaching at CICS Avalon is top notch, it’s the focus on character development that’s had the greatest impact on me and on my family. Character at CICS Avalon is about addressing the needs of the whole child, beyond the uniforms and the orderly, safe classrooms to having clear and consistent expectations for students. When my older daughter transferred to CICS Avalon as a seventh grader, she sometimes struggled to accept responsibility for her actions because she had never been in a school where students were held accountable for their actions. But now that she’s in high school and taking honors classes, she is grateful for the high standards she was held to at CICS Avalon and how the school challenged her to do her best.
I have a three-year old daughter who hasn’t started school yet, but I’m already teaching her lessons that I’ve learned from seeing my older children grow at ReGen about integrity and effort. Choosing to be part of the CICS Avalon school community has not just made me a better teacher, it’s also made me a better parent.
