Ishani Mehta

Ishani Mehta, Ed.D. is a first generation Indian American woman who has always been a fierce advocate for equity in education. Growing up, Ishani was raised in the city of Detroit where she experienced educational inequity first hand and vowed to be a part of the change. Ishani graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in English and Psychology. Ishani joined Teach for America in New York in 2010. She earned her Master's Degree in Special Education at Hunter College and began serving as a Special Education Teacher for K-4 within the Uncommon Schools Network in New York City. Through her 12 years at Uncommon, Ishani served as Special Education Teacher and Coordinator for Grades K-4, became a Founding Grade 4 Teacher and moved into her Principal Fellowship in 2014. In 2015, Ishani transitioned into the K-4 Principal role in BedStuy, Brooklyn, where she led a school turnaround that led to school achievement reaching 80%-90%+ proficiency levels in both ELA and Math, alongside a 90%+ staff retention rate. After 5 years of serving as a K-4 principal and closing out a decade within elementary school, Ishani transitioned into the role of Middle School Principal for Grades 5-8 to expand her impact. She served as Middle School Principal for two years where she bridged the alignment between elementary and middle school, making double-digit gains in both ELA and Math within two years. 

Ishani received her Doctorate in Education in Leadership, Policy and Organizations at Vanderbilt University, where she was awarded the Arville W. Wheeler Prize - a recognition granted to a top doctoral student in the area of education administration.
